Do I need a German work visa for a remote job at a German company?
Yes — if you are a non-EU national working for a German employer (even fully remotely), you need a valid German work visa. You cannot use a tourist or Schengen visa to work for a German employer while physically in Germany. The EU Blue Card is the most common path, and it requires an employment contract with a salary above the 2026 threshold.
Top remote-friendly German employers
Zalando, Personio, Celonis, HelloFresh (tech teams), Personio, and SumUp all have well-established remote-work policies. Most unicorns and late-stage startups founded after 2018 default to hybrid or remote-first.
