How common is full remote in Germany?
Post-pandemic, about 24% of German workers work fully or mostly remotely (Statista, Q4 2025). For tech and software roles — the highest-density sector for English-speaking hiring — that figure jumps to over 50%. Fully remote roles are common in: software engineering, product management, data science, digital marketing, and UX design.
Customer-facing roles (sales, support, account management) are less often fully remote, but hybrid (2–3 days in office) is very common.
The tax question: working remotely from outside Germany
If you are hired by a German company but physically located outside Germany, tax gets complicated. Germany generally taxes you as a resident after 183 days in-country. If you are working remotely *from* Germany as a non-EU national, you still need a valid work visa — a tourist visa does not cover remote employment for a German employer.
If you want to work for a foreign company while living in Germany, you can apply for the Freiberufler visa (freelancer visa) or a standard work permit if the company registers an entity in Germany.
