Germany is Europe's largest tech employer by head count, and the vast majority of roles at startups, scale-ups, and international tech companies are conducted entirely in English. The German Startup Monitor 2025 found that over 80% of startups with 50+ employees use English as their primary working language.
Unlike traditional German Mittelstand companies (which often require German), the tech sector — especially in Berlin, Munich, and Hamburg — has adopted English as its operating language almost universally.
Which tech roles are in demand in Germany in 2026?
- Backend engineer – highest demand, particularly Python, Go, Java, and Scala
- Frontend / full-stack engineer – React, TypeScript, and Vue.js are the dominant stacks
- Data engineer and ML engineer – significant shortage; salaries are above average
- Platform / DevOps / SRE – cloud-native companies building on AWS, GCP, and Azure

Remote vs. on-site in German tech
